Herma has expanded its film expertise with the introduction of two new self-adhesive label materials designed for clear-on-clear applications, combining high transparency with certified wash-off performance and economical processing.

Both materials are based on Herma’s permanent multilayer adhesive 72Hpw, which delivers strong adhesion and optical clarity while meeting recycling requirements. Available in the company’s net width range, the new constructions offer short delivery times for label converters.

According to Herma, the 72Hpw adhesive provides reliable permanent adhesion even under challenging conditions, such as high humidity often encountered in beverage filling environments, while still enabling clean wash-off during recycling.

“The adhesive we developed has once again proven to be a highly versatile solution for film applications,” says Hendrik Kehl, product manager at Herma. “Its formulation allows transparency and wash-off performance to coexist – properties that are often difficult to combine.”

For clear-on-clear labeling, the adhesive is paired with Herma PP transparent super tc film (type 886) and offered with two PET release liners in thicknesses of 30 µm and 23 µm. This range supports a wide variety of processing requirements and enables high-speed dispensing. The materials are compatible with all conventional printing processes and deliver consistent print quality, making them suitable for cosmetic products, household cleaners, and applications requiring resistance to weathering and chemicals.

Recycling compatibility across multiple streams

The 72Hpw adhesive has already been certified recyclable by the Cyclos-HTP Institute in multiple material combinations, including with Herma PP transparent super tc film. It meets recycling requirements for PET containers in an 80°C wash cycle and HDPE containers in a 40°C wash cycle. In addition, RecyClass has classified PP films combined with 72Hpw as fully compatible with rigid HDPE recycling streams.

The adhesive is also suitable for labeling glass and PP containers, supporting a broad range of packaging formats.

Both new self-adhesive materials are produced at Herma’s Plant 2 facility at its headquarters in Filderstadt, Germany, which was purpose-built for film production. Highly automated coating processes ensure precise, consistent quality and efficient downstream label converting.
